Documentary Special - One Man And His Shoes

Monday, October 12, 2020 - 18:00

The Producers' Symposium is delighted to welcome Yemi Bamiro and Will Thorne, the director-producer team behind One Man And His Shoes. Ahead of its screening at London Film Festival, we'll discuss how this remarkable, truly-independent documentary came into being over a period of years, how it was almost derailed by the pandemic, and how they pulled off a remarkable reverse slam-dunk in overtime to land a slot at the UK's most prestigious festival.

The film reveals, with insider interviews, how Michael Jordan's dominance of the court became a commercial phenomenon that changed everything - the sport of basketball, the fortunes of the Nike corporation, the very essence of street culture. Jordan himself became the world's first billionaire sportsman, and Nike has dominated the sport shoe market ever since. But this success came with a dark side on the street, with some even resorting to murder to obtain the latest pair of Air Jordans.

We'll be talking about the process and challenges of producing the film, and Yemi will talk about his inventive, 90s-referencing approach to telling this story.

Greenlit were proud to support and operate the crowdfunding campaign for One Man And His Shoes. The discussion will be chaired by Greenlit CEO Peter J. Storey.

The film screens virtually via the BFI Player at the London Film Festival between Tuesday 13th October and Friday 16th, and with a Q&A and theatrical screening at the Genesis Mile End at 18.20 on the 15th. BFI London Film Festival industry passholders can also participate in an interactive session with Yemi on the 15th at 15.20.

Will Thorne spent over ten years producing TV and branded content before setting up Break Em Films to produce narrative and feature documentary films. Shortlisted for the BFI Vision Awards, ONE MAN AND HIS SHOES is the second feature film he has produced.

Yemi Bamiro has directed documentaries for Channel 4, BBC, SKY and VICELAND, where Gaycation (hosted by actress Ellen Page) was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2016. ONE MAN AND HIS SHOES is his first feature-length documentary.
